Local Heroes
North Sullivan’s Local Heroes photographic exhibition captures the heart of a suburb
Sullivan’s 2004 exhibition at Gallery Xposure features revealing portraits of Balmain identities, some famous, some not so famous, all of whom Sullivan believes have made a meaningful contribution to the local community.
From politicians to buskers, Sullivan captures his subjects with an informality that belies the masterful complexity of his rich illustrative style.
Sullivan sees his project as a local show with outward appeal.
“I wanted to exhibit pictures that had a direct connection with the people living and working in the district while still appealing to the wider audience. It is my way of paying tribute to all those wonderful people who are the colour and vibrancy of the inner west.”. He continues, “Balmain is one of the most diverse communities in Australia and it is a privilege to be able to help celebrate the suburb’s unique character.”

As a long time supporter of public education, in particular the district’s Sydney Secondary College, Sullivan donated the profits from the show to the school’s P&C Association.
