North is proposing the project have a particular emphasis on the adolescents of the area, many of whom live in the Housing Commission flats & houses nearby. The title of the project ‘Against the Wall’, reflects both the location of the project as well as the social environment of many intended subjects.
As an art project, Against the Wall would be unique in that the subjects would be photographed against a backdrop that forms part of their space, their area and then those photographs would be mounted as an exhibition on the very same wall in the very same place. It is certain to become a feature of the area.
We see this project as just the beginning of something much bigger. Photography is a great way to step around cultural and social boundaries. Somehow the camera allows me and other photographers to enter another person’s world even though we are from an all together different background. This project and the relationship The Photo Studio has formed with many of these kids is a perfect example.
